Cenchrus spinifex (coastal sandbur)

Cenchrus spinifex (Poaceae) - coastal sandbur; native to America - fruit (anthecosum); the burr-like fruit of the coastal sandbur has a complex structure. It develops from a fertile spikelet that is surrounded by an involucre of sterile spikelets. In the ripe fruit the sterile spikelets form a hard, spiny burr assisting the animal dispersal (epizoochory); 9.5mm long (including spines)
