Calandrinia eremaea from Seeds - Time Capsules of Life

Calandrinia eremaea (Portulacaceae) - twining purslane; collected in South Australia - the seed is shed from capsules and has no obvious adaptations to a specific mode of dispersal. The conspicuous swelling at the hilum (yellow) might function as an elaiosome to attract ants but its texture and natural colour (black) suggest that it is probably a rudimentary aril that has lost its function; seeds 0.56mm in diameter.
